Plastic Components
Plastic components are polymeric materials with capabilities of being molded or shaped by application of heat and pressure.
This guide explores everything you need to know about plastic components.
Types Of Plastic Components
Plastic component
- Medical and Pharmaceutical industry; Crafts products like eyedroppers and syringes to meet sterilization standards, quality and uniformity.
- Telecommunications; Data and information are transmitted throughout the world using tons of fiber optic cables made of plastic adapters and parts.
- Food and beverage; Food-grade materials and plastics products which meets high food and drug administration standards are produced by plastic injection molding.
- Transportation; Transportation companies uses molded products and parts like aspirators, semi-truck handles, brake pads and body panels.
- Building and construction; Plastic injection molding crafts parts and tools needed for everyday work in building and construction industry.
They are stable, durable, lightweight, cost-effective item and reliable.
- Agriculture; Plastic material are highly resistant to humidity, uv, impact, humidity and much more making it the perfect material for parts.
Plastic injection molding creates durable agriculture products that stand up elements on a farm for the agriculture industry e.g. feeding troughs.
Plastic Material For Injection Molding Components
Some of the most common components are:

Plastic components
Acrylic
It is a strong, clear and transparent thermoplastic that provides a lighter-weight, shatter-resistant and excellent optical.
The material is suitable for outdoor use, it is highly resistant to sunlight and weather e.g. solar panels, bathroom enclosures etc.
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene
It is an opaque polymer with low melting point hence very easy to mold.
It is relatively inexpensive, tough and provides good resistance to heat, oils, acids, and alkalis used in electronic components etc.
Nylon Polyamide
Are either natural or synthetic large group of materials that can be. nylon, a type of synthetic polyimide.
Nylon is prone to shrinkage and subject to inadequate filling, it is used in bearings, bushings, gears and slides.
Polycarbonate
Naturally transparent, strong and tough materials that maintains its physical properties over a wider temperature range is called polycarbonate.
It maintains its color over time when pigmented while its strength is retained, is used for e.g. tinted windows, diffusers etc.
Polyethyelene
Polyethylene are of three types; high density, low density and polyethylene terephthalate.
They are low-cost plastics that resist both moisture and chemicals e.g. water bottle, milk bottles and plastic films.
Polyoxymethylene
In engineering plastic injection molded into parts that require low friction, high stiffness and excellent dimensional stability is called polyoxymethylene.
To lower coefficient of friction, combine excellent rigidity with thermal stability suitable for gears, bearings, conveyor belts and pulley wheels.
Polypropylene
It is a hard and more heat resistant but its density changes with fillers hence low density.
When exposed to moisture or water it doesn’t degrade due to its high melting point.
Polystyrene
They are of two basic types for plastic injection molding, general purpose polystyrene and high impact polystyrene.
Thermoplastic Elastomer
It is a blend of rubber and plastic materials with properties and performance of rubber but processed like plastic.
They are easy to mold and less expensive e.g. footwear, auto parts, medical devices and pet products.
Thermoplastic Polyurethane
It is a thermoplastic elastomer with a rubber-like elasticity, its high durometer can replace hard rubber.
They are used in footwear, caster wheels, gaskets and sporting goods.
Benefits Of Plastic Components
Some of the main benefits include:
Efficient Production
A minimal amount of waste generated with Injection Molding machines helps in efficient processing of raw materials.
When manufacturing other parts, we can reduce costs that come with material waste by recycling.
Strong Construction
It is easy to add fillers and additives to molded products in plastic injection molding process.
These helps companies produce more durable, long-lasting and strong items.
Longer Life Span
Plastics are very durable, they are more resistant to environmental attacks, corrosion, chemical attacks and reactions hence long life.
Customizable Molds
Materials and colors to craft items can be customized to meet your requirements perfectly.
They have low melting and high malleability properties thus easy to create shapes.
Faster Manufacturing Time
Speed of processing plastic parts with injection molding is high, companies craft products in a few seconds hence increasing overall productivity.
Less production time gives a company room to devote labor to other business procedures hence greater profits.
Cost-effective Processes
Many of the injection molding processes are automated and injection molding machines require little supervision and oversight.
Lower Packaging And Shipping Costs
Due to their light weight and flexibility properties, plastic components weighs less and can be fabricated to any shape.
Attractive Finishing
Plastic injection molded products are very attractive and ready for use as soon as they come out of the mold.
Design Considerations For Plastic Components
Injection molded plastic component
Wall Thickness
Molded parts with non-uniform wall sections contributes to warpage and stresses.
Too thin sections are more feasible with small parts.
Draft Angles
Injection molded parts have a tendency to shrink onto a core due to shrinkage of plastic material creating higher contact pressure on the core surface
Radius
Rounded corners ease smooth material flow thus less stress concentration on the part and tools hence adding strength to molded part.
While sharp corners are difficult to fill reducing tooling strength thus causing stress concentration.
Hole Depth To Diameter Ratio
Use short pins for blind holes, longer pins will be pushed by molten plastic material pressure during molding causing more deflections.
The recommended ratio of hole depth-to-diameter should be less than 2.
Ribs
Design ribs in correct proportion, this limits defects such as short shots hence providing the required strength.
Thick and deep ribs causes sink marks and filling problems thus ejection.
Use supporting ribs in case of too long or too wide ribs and core out materials to reduce defect risk.
Ways Of Fabricating Plastic Components
Some of the most common techniques include:
Injection molding plastic components
Injection Molding Plastic Parts
It processes both thermoplastic and thermoset polymers.
It is suitable for various parts with thin and consistent walls to assume various shapes and sizes e.g. disposable food trays, car dashboards.
Process
- Heat the plastic pellets up until they melt.
- Use a reciprocating screw to force the molten plastic into a metal mold.
- Cool the molten material to solidify and assume the shape of the mold cavity.
- Eject the solid part from the mold.
Vacuum Casting Plastic Component
Plastic fabrication process employed for small batches of colorful prototypes is called vacuum casting e.g. electronics cases and covers.
Process
- Pours into a silicone mold a urethane casting resin.
- Remove the air pockets and bubbles, resulting in an exceptionally smooth finished part.
- Cure the urethane parts in an oven.
Plastic Machining Components
Plastic machining is a fabrication process that encompasses both CNC milling, CNC turning and other related processes.
It uses either manual or computer-controlled cutting tools e.g. automobile lighting etc.
Blow Molding Plastic Components
It is in three different variants i.e. injection blow molding, extrusion blow molding and injection stretch blow molding.
It is suitable for hollow plastic parts like plastic water bottles, drums, fuel tanks.
Rotational Molding Plastic Components
Rotational molding uses high temperatures and low pressure to form plastic parts by rotating a mold to move plastic material around inside.
Process
- Place the powdered plastic in a mold.
- Heat the plastic while rotating two or more axes.
- Make sure the molten plastic covers the inside of the mold entirely thus assuming the shape of the cavity.
Fused Deposition Modeling
FDM is a fast and cost-effective plastic fabrication process that produces a wide range of shapes including complex internal geometries shapes.
Process
- Heat up extruded thermoplastic filament.
- Deposit the filament in precise shapes according to computer instructions from a moving nozzle attached to a printhead.
- To build a complete 3D object, print 2D slices of the part layer by layer.
Plastic welding
A fabrication process of joining thermoplastic components that are not suitable for gluing or other assembly methods is called plastic welding.
It has different variants e.g. speed tip welding, contact welding and hot gas welding.
Process
- Prepare the surface of the plastic.
- Apply heat and pressure to the plastic.
- Cool.
Thermoforming Plastic Component
Plastic fabrication process that gently heats plastic sheet instead of fully molten plastic is called thermoforming.
Process
- Heat the plastic sheet to make it flexible.
- Use vacuum to stretch it over the mold.
- Trim the sheet.
- Cool.
